STATEMENT BY HE ADAMA BARROW ON THE SIGNING OF THE MOU OF THE
INTER PARTY COMMITTEE
7TH MARCH 2017
Chairman, Independent Electoral Commission
Honourable Speaker of the National Assembly
Honourable Chief Justice
Honourable Cabinet Ministers
Leaders of all Political Parties
Members of the diplomatic and consular corps
Venerable Religious leaders
Members of the Press
All protocols respectfully observed.
I have the fortune to address this signing ceremony which should have taken place before the 1st December 2016 Presidential election which steered me to be where I am today as President of the Republic of The Gambia.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the political parties registered by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is a by-product of our common desire to create a peaceful and stable political environment underpinned by a transparent and democratic political dispensation without which the prosperity, happiness and wellbeing of our people will be compromised.
The MoU aims to give dignity and respect to the Office of President and that of the political opposition and encourage them to become partners in national construction and development.
The MoU encourages Government and political parties to operate within the confines of the Constitution and other laws of the land. It promotes the rights of political parties, especially the opposition to operate freely and hold the Government to account.
The cornerstone of the MoU is to encourage dialogue and cooperation between political parties and foster compliance with a Code of Conduct that restricts them from using offensive language, violence, intimidation and undue use of powers for wrong political purpose.
The establishment of an Inter-Party Committee that is to meet periodically to settle differences and promote development on electoral matters is welcomed by the Coalition Government.
I wish to assure you that I will do everything within my powers to support this Committee whose objective is to ensure that we live in a society where dialogue and cooperation between political parties will serve as a key cornerstone in the promotion and consolidation of democracy, rule of law, human rights and good governance in The Gambia.
Thank you for your attention.
