Minister of Agriculture
Born in Yundum in October 1946, Omar Jallow is The Gambia’s Minister of Agriculture. He is also the Acting Secretary General and Party Leader of the People Progressive Party. He was also an executive member of the National Alliance for Democracy and Development, an alliance that brought together three opposition parties for the 2011 elections in The Gambia
Mr Jallow previously worked for the Ministry of Agriculture under The Gambia’s First Republic and was responsible for the agricultural and livestock services, crop protection, planning and cooperation. He was Minister of Water Resources and Environment from 1981 to 1989. His experience covers many other positions in country’s agricultural sector. This dates back to 1966 as a corporate inspector in the Ministry of Agriculture. He has also been a consultant on natural resources, rural development, environment and human resettlement programmes, and worked with UN specialised agencies like the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
Mr Jallow holds an advanced diploma in agricultural project appraisal and financing, a post-graduate certificate in cooperative management, a certificate in cooperative management and bookkeeping and a certificate in farmer education on rural savings. He is married with children.
